I wish I could keep of row of pictures of young malnourished veg/vegans I run into. The mental breakdown of even the healthiest veg eators ( bvit, zinc)Their cravings for sugar and breads indicating lack of protein and fats.

The fact is that most of the important nutrients needed to maintain healh are from animals- they convert grass and bugs it to a usable dense energy source.

Joints will come apart - lack of proline & lysine. Anger and depression - lack of animal fats, b12, zinc. Look at the symptoms of deficiency in third world coutries who lack of protein - you will see that exists right here in our own bay area.

Oh - the mom I meet who is veg and her new born baby was born with brain dysfunction and in Intensive care ( lack of cholesterol and fat in diet)

As a nutritionist I see it all the time. we need to talk about these facts that are happening -

Walking to work for me is not an option. First, I have to take my girls to preschool and etc. daily. But only being about 2 miles from work, it would seem like walking would be no problem. But navigating the current US 27 situation is like a deathwish. I know sidewalks are coming, but until then, the go-go machine is my safest bet. I keep saying I will try riding my bike to work during the summer when my wife is home with the kids, but hospital hill is still VERY scary.

I bike to work at least once a week and it's a real treat. I notice those days tend to be higher-energy and more enjoyable. While riding I try to count my breaths and set an intention for the day. It's true-you notice so much more of your surrounding than when commuting by "go-go machine."

Your reflections reminded me of the two years when I lived in Bloomington for med school and walked to class every day. I found myself much more tuned in to the seasons and rhythms of nature. I noticed the first leaves changing in the fall and the first crocuses in the spring. It certainly helped to balance sitting and learning all day!

I walked to work this week which is about 10 miles down the lakefront of Chicago. Other than problems with shoes leading to blisters and shin splints, it was a beautiful walk. My biggest issue, during early spring (and late fall) is the lack of availability of public restrooms which is sometimes enough for me not to walk. Communities can also do a better job of having affordable shower facilities available for after your walk (or bike or run) to work. Otherwise, you can't beat the view and if necessary, I can always get a few phone calls made on the way.

John: the electronic method may indeed yield a time savings over the long run. And who knows how much paper, time, etc. will be saved by not having banks have to accept physical checks as much any more. But because I am just a fanatical blogger, these bits of good news don't dissuade me from proclaiming that everything is broken and if they'd just do it my way, everything would be better.

So... moving forward, will all this effort make future years' tax payments worth it? The overall point is still a good one but in future years, you won't have to do nearly the amount of work you've performed for this first time.

Aww, I wanna see the numbers...

-----

Time bogs not otherwise classified
(apply as needed):

-kids, pets, care-giving
-practice, performance, competition (instrument, art, sport, skill)
-continuing education, professional development
-prayer & worship
-incarceration
-inebriation, self-medication

-----

I like to allow, budget, "un-schedule" large spans of redundancy and slack - days, weeks, at a time. (ideally, someday, months and years...)

I was required to fill out something similar before my sophomore year to plan out my time that ended up being distributed to the entire incoming freshman class... maybe you'll share yours with the intertubes...

This does remind me of people, including myself, who "can't find the time" to do some of the things they want or spend time with the people they want. I'm a big believer that you make time for those people/things/activities that are most important to you. It's all about priorities...
