Today, I’m happy to publicly invite others in Richmond and Wayne County to join in this effort to raise the level of public discourse in our area. Whether it’s commentary on the local arts scene, restaurant reviews, political news analysis, your experiences with religion and spirituality, technology tools, sustainability tips or perspectives on education, we welcome contributions from those who feel they can provide a local connection and provoke conversation that might help move the community forward in some form.

What’s more, you can make a little money while you do it. We want to encourage compelling writing while valuing the time of our contributors, and so we’re also offering a small amount of compensation as an incentive, currently US$20 for each contribution accepted for publication on the site.

You can learn more about what it means to become a contributor to ProgressiveWayneCounty.org, and I hope you’ll help spread the word about this opportunity to encourage new kinds of dialog in our community.

It will make me feel better to acknowledge that here, so: my blogging is paused right now.

I plan to resume a regular schedule later this summer. I’m still tweeting, although with less frequency there too. Make sure you’re subscribed to my RSS feed or e-mail subscription so you know when I start up posting again.

Thanks for tuning in!

Let’s see, how am I doing on my target of blogging three times per week in 2010? FAIL. Actually, January and February were pretty good, but March has been sorely lacking. I will for now use the excuse of “I was busy” and throw in some specifics like “I was planning an open house” and “I was writing a new vacation policy for my staff,” but I don’t expect you to be any more forgiving as a result. Let’s see if I can start to get back on track.

In the meantime, as a distraction, here are some things you might want to click on and check out:

Is it possible that all this political rage is not actually about healthcare?

I enjoyed the documentary “This Film is Not Yet Rated,” which takes a look at the MPAA’s system of assigning maturity ratings to films, and how it affects the production, distribution and success of movies in the U.S. The themes were that (A) a small group of anonymous and inaccessible people have significant influence in deciding what becomes a part of our culture, (B) anything that depicts the sexual empowerment or fulfillment of women is dangerous or obscene, and (C) anything that isn’t 100% pro-military, pro-war is dangerous or obscene.

I know these themes will be shocking to you, so just take a minute and catch your breath.

There’s a new federal policy that says cycling and other forms of non-motorized transportation should be treated as equal to motorized transportation when we plan our cities and streets. Yay! But apparently, this is going to lead to economic catastrophe. RUN FOR–er, uh, I mean DRIVE FOR YOUR LIVES!!

Have you tried playing Glenn Beck Bingo? It’s a great party game.

I really hope none of the commenters on my review of Lierre Keith’s “The Vegetarian Myth” were among the militant vegans who assaulted her at a recent speaking engagement. Um, you’re doing it wrong.

There now, you almost forgot about my blogging transgressions, didn’t you?

Welcome to my first blog post of 2010. I didn’t expect that my hiatus would be over a month long, but here I am in mid-January.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to complete my blog feedback survey at the end of 2009 – it was really helpful in understanding how my regular readers see the blog. From the responses I received, here are the highlights:

60% of you read most of the posts here, and 40% always read the full posts.

Most of you find out about blog updates from Twitter or Facebook, and the rest use RSS feeds or just visit my website directly.

Most of you think the blog is either very (or at least more than moderately) interesting and useful.

You seem to like the variety of my blog topic areas, but “technology and internet stuff” came out on top while humor, sustainability issues, and posts about Richmond, IN all came in a close second.

You think the design and layout of the blog is generally adequate; only 1 person said it was distracting.

The single thing you think I should do to improve my blog is to post more frequently. After that, you either want me to expand to more topics, or to focus to fewer topics.

At least half of you would like to comment more on what I write, but don’t feel like you have time to formulate a response.

For most of you, adding sponsorship ads to my site is either not a problem at all, or might be annoying but wouldn’t change how you read the blog.

Other comments included:

“More naughty bits!”

“I like your courage in saying what you want to say.”

“Thanks for keeping it interesting.”

“I think you should go retro and get a weekly column in the PI.” (I’m open to this.)

“It’s one of the few blogs I genuinely try to read on a regular basis.”

“I appreciate that you take a public stance on several important community issues.”

“Even if I don’t agree with the viewpoint of your commentary, I usually come away with the feeling that you have approached the subject from a thoughtful perspective.”

“I read new entries just about immediately.”

“I think you have a unique perspective on small business, technology, and alternative means of building community…You have a lot of knowledge AND a vision, which is a great combination.”

“Keep up the good work.”

Thanks again so much for your honesty, and thanks for reading! (And of course, I welcome feedback any time.)

Now I can announce the winner of the random drawing to win a $25 gift certificate for either any business in the Center City business district in Richmond, Indiana or for Amazon.com.

The winner is Aaron Hill! I’d like to post the entirety of Aaron’s response upon being notified of his win, since I think it really captures a lot:

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

Thanks again, Aaron.

Looking forward, I’d like to honor the recurring theme in the feedback I got in that survey and from others: that posting more often about the issues of the day in our community is a good thing. One of my own personal goals for this year is to do more creative writing, and while my blog can’t be my only outlet for that, I hope it’s a significant one.

My current target is to post at least three times per week, and at least one substantial entry within those three. The other entries may be more like a couple of paragraphs and a little less refined, but hopefully still useful and/or interesting enough to keep you tuned in. I will appreciate any encouragement, reminders or coffee that you want to offer if you see me slipping from that a bit.

Happy 2010. Here’s to a new year of blogging.

The dynamic duo have teamed up to do it again for Blog Indiana 2009, which starts later this week. It looks to be an expanded and amplified version of the inaugural event – the conference will span three days with multiple tracks – blogging and social media, higher education, non-profit, etc. – and it sounds like there will be a lot more people there too (with great representation from Richmond). Summersault has returned as an event sponsor, and I’m also presenting again, this time with a session on “Using Social Media for Real-World Community Improvement” and as a panelist in a session about “technology.”

I’ve apparently also been nominated for the award of “Best Hoosier Blogger” in the “2009 Blindy Awards,” and while I’m not saying that I will give you significant amounts of cash just because you click on this link and vote for me, I’m not saying I won’t do that either.

I’m looking forward to gathering with fellow bloggers and fans of technology, and sharing about how these tools can help us make life a little better for everyone. I hope to see some of you there!

If you spend any amount of time following my online adventures – through my blog, Twitter, Facebook, or otherwise – then there are some things you need to know:

Please don’t assume that you know me because you read my posts or status updates. I’m not saying this because I think I’m mysterious or hard to know, I’m saying it because I believe reading someone’s status updates does not constitute an engaged and genuine human relationship. I do use the Internet to express myself, but only one very particular slice of myself. I hope we can talk “in real life” or even via more direct online communication if we really want to get to know each other better.

Please don’t assume that I know you because of your posts or status updates. I sometimes try to keep up with what people are saying about their lives on social networking sites, but sometimes I definitely don’t bother. If there’s something exciting, hard, important, or otherwise noteworthy happening in your life, you should assume you need to tell me about it in an “old fashion way” (e-mail, phone, letter, in person) if you want me to know or care. (Hopefully I will also be asking you how you are doing once in a while too.)

I have a sense of humor that sometimes doesn’t translate very well to written electronic form. Sometimes I type things that sound absolutely hilarious in my head, and come out quite confusing (or even worse, alarming) in pixel form. I guess you should assume that if something I type sounds weird or problematic, it’s just a poorly executed attempt at humor, but you’re still welcome to call me out on it.

I don’t act on ambient invitations. Just because you think I may have heard about your (non-public) event, gathering or party because other people are mentioning it online or because you mentioned it on Facebook, please don’t assume that I think of myself as invited. This may be old fashioned or even self-absorbed of me, but I generally still want to know directly from someone if they want me in attendance somewhere (and will generally give you back the courtesy of a direct RSVP).

I don’t really use Facebook for anything other than status updates. I generally do not respond to requests for joining causes or groups, and I never accept requests to take quizzes, play games, or send or receive strange little objects via applications. I often don’t have time or interest in responding to comments people post on my status updates. I know, I know, some people will be like “Dude, you’re DOING it wrong,” and maybe I am. Just don’t take it personally.

I use Delicious.com for social bookmarking, and you should too. If I see a website link that I think you might enjoy, I’m 27% more likely to follow through on that thought and make you aware of it if you have a Delicious.com account so that I can bookmark it for you there. If I have to send you an e-mail message, I’m less likely to bother. I’m sorry, it’s lazy, I know, I know.

I realize that this may sound curmudgeonly, especially coming from someone who works with the Internet for a living and who encourages people to use it as a tool for better communication. But if you do read my blog, you know I feel strongly that we need to be very careful about replacing genuine human interaction with stalking each other on Facebook.

I know it may be futile, but it’s important for me to draw some of these lines in the sand about what kind of life I will and will not live online.

If you maintain some sort of presence on the Internet (via Facebook, Twitter, a blog or otherwise), what are some ground rules you set for yourself, and what should people expect (or not expect) from that online existence?

All bloggers do it at least once in their blogging career. It’s remains pretty faux pas in my opinion, but here I am anyway. You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?

It’s the blog post that only exists to note that I haven’t been blogging much lately. Gasp.

Sometimes it can be a sign of a dying blog, or a lack of personal creativity, but I assure you that’s not the case here. No, I think we all get to have at least one of these kinds of posts once every few years or so. I think my last one was in 2005, so I’m due.

For now, talk amongst yourselves, and check out my inane procrastinatory ramblings on Twitter.

I haven’t had the chance to blog lately, but here are some bits and pieces to chew on. First, some links:

Friday’s episode of On the Media was excellent as usual, but did an especially good job of covering the strange way the 11 PM Eastern network television calling of the election works, cognitive dissonance around the world about electing Barack Obama, and difference between real grassroots organizing and just another marketing campaign. Great stuff.

Clearing Up Basic Misunderstandings – some interesting post-mortem thoughts on the McCain/Palin ticket from Alan Pavlik.

Last political links, I promise: What the silence in Grant Park said – yes. The one where she makes her post-election political statement – nicely put. Got to admire the geeks who were behind the flood of website traffic leading up to and on election day.

Whitewater Valley Artists Consortium – I think I’d known these folks had a group, but just now found their website. Glad they’re here!

Drama Prairie Dog – can’t stop watching it!

Some topics I’m thinking about, and may eventually blog about:

The possibilities and problems of pacifism, from a primitivist perspective

Even though complex relationships bring joy, how do we navigate the complicated privacy and sensitivity issues that come up when we wear multiple hats, and even sometimes have competing internal agendas?

How to talk usefully about peak oil and relocalization with those who haven’t encountered the concepts before, and who might be personally resistant to exploring them further?

Where we could set up a Flash Mob event in Richmond?

Psalm 40:1-3

The over-saturation of “green” messages, products and events.

The cultural and economic advantages of having community and retail spaces that take advantage of “swerve,” compared to single-destination lifestyles

How about you…what’s on your mind?

One of the weird things about blogs is that, as much time as people put into creating interesting and useful content for them, it’s rare that anyone goes to the trouble to read back through older entries unless they’re really looking for something specific, or are otherwise very committed to the content.

I don’t expect that most of my readers here will bother with browsing through archives just for the fun of it, so I already make available a couple of topic-related mechanisms to find what you’re looking for: the list of post tags (visualized in the image shown here), the category tree, the search form, the list of top-rated posts, etc.

Today I’m introducing another way to get to my core content, an index of my signature blog posts. This is a list of my more substantial and well-considered essays on a variety of topics, and I think it represents well the thinking and writing I’ve done on topics I’m passionate about. I’ll try to keep it updated regularly, and I hope you find it useful.
