Earlier today I attended the Indiana University 2012 Business Outlook Panel in its visit to Richmond. It’s a group that “has presented national, state, and local economic forecasts for the coming year to business, political, and community leaders of Indiana” for the last 38 years. I attended the same gathering back in 2005 and I have to say that today’s commentary wasn’t much different from what it was six years ago: “things are not great with the economy, but there are reasons to be cautiously optimistic.”

As I noted in my reflections from the 2005 event, there were a couple of troubling ideas that permeated the remarks, especially from the panelists looking at global and national trends.

The main one that I continue to struggle with is the idea that we just have to wait for the global economy to improve and drive things to get better at the national, state and local level. In defending the power of globalism, one of the panelists even outright made fun of the idea of building a regionally self-reliant economy.

A more regional approach to economic development – instead of depending on the importation of resources from around the world – is exactly the approach that many others (myself included) are saying is key for communities like Richmond to surviving the increasingly intense effects of rising fuel prices, the falling value of the dollar and the destruction of the natural environment. While I appreciate that there’s hope in what a thriving global economy might mean for midwestern cities, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to ask the people without jobs or credit or homes or disposable income to keep waiting it out, just another year or two.

Despite the inclusion of this troubling premise, the event was still interesting and perspective-bringing; some other tidbits shared by the panel:

Political dysfunction at the national level is clearly eroding confidence in the ability of policy-makers (Congress and the President) to have any real effect on the economy

To make sure we can survive through any kind of economic recovery, we have to address the Eurozone economic situation, stop implementing short-term, ineffective fixes domestically and start solving problems for the long term, open and evolve our financial system (“Federal reserve monetary policy currently penalizes people who save instead of rewarding them”), and pay attention to China’s emerging consumer culture.

Despite the down economy, corporate earnings are up 11% and are expected to improve

We have to do better at answering the question “what should investors do with their money?” The market is too volatile, savings accounts don’t offer a return, and if we don’t have some good options, people will seek dangerous ways to get a higher rate of return (e.g. lending money to home-buyers who can’t actually afford it).

Indiana has been hit harder than most states, using a quarter of a million jobs from 2007 to 2009. Those jobs mostly aren’t coming back, in part because they’ve been lost from organizations that are more efficient and don’t need them any more.

Private education and healthcare services are the two industries that are doing well in Indiana, with 36,000 jobs added in the last year. The government sector has recently done well too as the result of stimulus fund application (there were 450,000 government jobs in Indiana as of May 2010) but that’s expected to level off or decline as those funds dry up.

Housing sales in Indiana are down 3% and the average price of homes for sale are up 1% – not a good economic trend, and new housing construction has slowed significantly.

I also learned a new economic term that is very timely for my own hiring attempts at Summersault. One of the event attendees asked the panel how they reconcile the issue of companies and organizations investing in lots of infrastructure and equipment to expand but then not being able to find qualified workers to fill those jobs. The term for this is “structural unemployment” where there’s a mismatch between demand in the labor market and the skills and locations of the workers seeking employment. Richmond is experiencing a form of this now, where we (including my company) have positions that are open but our workforce doesn’t always have the training or skills to fill them. The panel didn’t offer any particular solution to this phenomenon, but the implication was that it is among our most serious challenges to solve.

Thanks to Indiana University East for sponsoring this event and to Reid Hospital for hosting it. I hope it generates some useful conversation.

Capitalism vs. The Environment: A small business perspective on doing well AND doing good. This coming Thursday September 24th at 4 PM at Indiana University East in Whitewater Hall Room 132 the Community Room, free and open to the public, no registration required. I’ll be talking about our experiences at Summersault as we’ve tried to do the “right thing” when it comes to the environment and nurturing sustainable lifestyles, and examine whether it’s even possible to pursue a for-profit technology venture and not be in a harmful relationship with the land and life around us.

Get Techie, Get Social! A workshop to help non-technical people learn more about technical topics, especially social media like Facebook and Twitter. Monday September 28th from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Morrisson-Reeves Library, free and open to the public, no registration required. If you’re at all intimidated by some of those “newfangled Internet trends” or the Internet in general, I hope you’ll bring your questions and frustrations so we can work them out together. There’s a PDF flyer for the event.

TCP/IP topics in Introduction to Computers and Computing. I’ll be speaking at this IU East class on Monday October 12th about things like DNS/Bind, network topologies and routing, e-mail technologies, and web technologies. This particular class isn’t open to the public, but if you have folks interested in discussing these topics in technical detail, let me know and I’d love to speak with your group.

Communicating Through Technology. Friday October 23rd at 9 AM at a conference for women hosted by the Wayne County Foundation. I’ll be speaking along with co-worker Jane Holman about social media and general technology topics. You can view the conference brochure in PDF, and registration is required.

I hope you can join me for one of these events!

I’m retroactively (for 2009) and proactively (for 2010) spreading the word about the Phantoscope Film Festival that just concluded its third year here in Richmond at the Art Museum. It’s an event that is just absolutely phenomenal to be happening right here in town, but that is sadly under-promoted and under-appreciated locally.

Every year, high school students around Indiana are encouraged to submit their films for judging and showing at the festival. The top ten or so films are selected by a panel of judges, and then shown at the screening night (which was tonight). Before the screening is a panel discussion with professional filmmakers and those involved in the film industry.

The event has gotten better and better every year. Tonight there was a great panel that included Zack Parker (long-time filmmaker from Richmond who has produced two feature films), the Herbert brothers (who created a Superbowl commercial that recently won $1 million in a contest!), Erin Newell (the director of the statewide film initiative Film Indiana), and Krista Hoffmann-Longtin (who has been involved in Indiana film stuff for some time now). The quality of the films were a clear step above last year’s submissions, with better sound production, plots, directing and photography all around. There were three documentaries and an animated short! Horror, comedy, romance and more! Even the format of the evening was more energizing, with Oscars-like introduction and award presentation, and a great MC in Scott Tucker. Well done, all for free.

Again, I’m not sure why the auditorium wasn’t packed. Sadly, there were no submissions from Richmond students that were screened, so perhaps we’re a bit behind in encouraging our young folks to consider filmmaking for fun, inspiration, or even a career. I’m hopeful that we’ll do that and more, encouraging support for this artform in non-highschool settings too (e.g. have a 48-hour film project here).

Hopefully more people will become aware of this refreshing and impressive burst of creativity on display, and ask what we can to do take better advantage of it in our community. If you’re at all interested in the creative arts and filmmaking in particular, I hope you’ll consider coming next year.

Are you interested in learning more about blogs and blogging? Consider attending the upcoming Blog Indiana 2008 conference in Indianapolis on August 16th and 17th, 2008. The event is a 2-day blogging and social media conference that aims to promote education, innovation and collaboration among Indiana’s fast-growing blogging community. The lineup of sessions looks great (even if it didn’t include me as a presenter and panelist, and even if it wasn’t sponsored in part by Summersault). You can learn about blogging basics, legal issues, corporate blogging, monetization, podcasting and videocasting, analytics, and much more.

The cool part is that the conference is only $49 for both days, and even cooler, I’ve got a 15% discount for you if you use this link to register. If you’re interested in blogging and social media at any level, I hope you can make it.

It was a great opportunity to get gifts for family and friends in the form of donations to local non-profit organizations, and at least for me, a great alternative to a day at the mall buying stuff. I was volunteering as a roaming greeter/explainer/helper, primarily tasked with walking folks through the order forms we used, but it was also a great chance to catch up with faces I haven’t seen around town in a while. Lots of laughter, great music, kids running around having fun, and a real spirit of giving in the air – what a great idea! You can learn more about Alternative Gift Fairs in general, or check out my small set of photos from the fair.

I recently created a new website that I hope grows into a useful resource in our community. Progressive Wayne County is an interactive community site that promotes and chronicles the progressive efforts of individuals, organizations and businesses in the area. I figured there were enough places you could go to read or talk about not-so-progressive happenings, and I’m all into creating balance in the universe, so there you go.

The site still needs a lot of work to make it more collaborative and relevant, but I’m excited about the possibilities. The greatest part of it is that anyone can add content to it (news, events, blog entries, etc.) so it’s not just about what I think of as progressive or know about going on. If you have comments or suggestions, send them my way!

About a year ago, I wrote down some observations about the phenomenon of podcasting: “…I’m probably just joining the throngs of people holding this up as The Next Big Thing, but I’m excited about what it represents: another positive use of the Internet for knowledge exchange and personal expression.“

Since that time, I’ve really come to appreciate the usefulness of podcasting even more, especially for balancing and complementing other sources of news and opinion, and lending a unique kind of voice to the conversations happening in our communities. To further that end, I’ve embarked on a trip down the road of hosting my own show: The Richmond News Review, a podcast providing a different perspective on local issues. As far as I can tell, there aren’t a whole lot of geographically-focused podcasts out there, so we’ll see how well that goes. It’s sure been a flurry of activity to get it going, and while I’m always cautious about the sustainability of and interest in such projects, I’m excited about the possibilities.

So, check it out, give it a listen, let me know what you think.

Last year I made a short video about the raising of a 104-foot wind turbine at the Cope Environmental Center here in town. I’ve just gotten around to posting it, so you can take a look and let me know what you think. It’s a little dramatic and rough around the edges, but it was great to be a part of that experience and get it on film. Thanks also to Evan Agee for his help in some production design, and Geoff Greenfield of Third Sun Solar & Wind Power for the great work and juicy sound bites. If you haven’t already, head on out to the Cope Center and check out all the renewable energy education stuff they have – it’s cutting edge! (And if you’re interested in that sort of thing, The Richmond/Wayne County Environmental Awareness Council hosts its sixth Environmental Awareness Luncheon on April 28 from 11:30 – 1:00 at Hills Pet Nutrition. There is no fee for the program and lunch is sponsored by Hills. Contact Jackie Vanderpool for more info.)

Consultant and speaker Rebecca Ryan is in town to talk to business leaders, civic planners, elected officials, community members, and especially young adult professionals about how to move from “Brain Drain” to “Brain Gain” in Wayne County. I’m usually cautious about having outside parties come in to a community to tell it what it needs (and the costs expended to do so). But after meeting and talking with Rebecca at a reception last night and hearing her speak to community leaders this morning, I know that she has some great things to say (and a really engaging way to say them) about the state of our community and how we can be better in ways that really matter for the future. Of course, I’m a little biased in that Summersault is a sponsor of the event and I’m on the planning committee that brought her here, but this is definitely far above the standard fare. In any case, if you’re reading this on 2/22 and are interested to hear her speak locally, she’s got another gig tonight at the 4th Floor Blues Club at 5:30 PM – e-mail info@richmondyap.com to RSVP. I’ll hopefully get a chance to do another post soon with some thoughts on the substance of these conversations.
