Name Day

March 15th is my Name Day.

Christopher: From the Greek 'Christos' meaning 'bearing Christ.' A man of
strength, purpose, and fortitude. A born explorer, always seeking the
next challenge. An adventurer.

That's what it says on a keychain I received from my friend Justine (from
South Africa) as a gift for my name day, which was last Sunday. It's
actually a Swedish tradition, as explained by my friend Maja from Sweden
(her name day was on Saturday, February 28th.) Every Swede (or every
Swedish name) has a particular day of the year associated with it. In the
past, apparently, it was a big to-do for some families, with gift-giving
and good food and everything like that. Today it's less of an "occaision"
but still celebrated in some form or another by many.

We celebrated Maja's with chocolate-like things and other sweet-like
things that I much enjoyed. Mine was a little more low-key, but I sorta
like it that way. However, readers should not feel restrained from giving
gifts (no keychains, please) on this occaision in the future. It's really
nice to have things to celebrate, yes?

Happy name day to me, happy name day to me...
