Toaster
On Monday I had someone from London kiss me on my knee.
It was like this, see. We (Anna, Maggie, and I) were relaxing on the lawn
in front of the National Gallery in London, facing Trafalgar Square. We
had just come from watching the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace
and were just relaxing in the sun eating lunch (Pita bread and cheese and
salami).
This young sorta frazzled looking guy came up and started chatting it up
with us and then asked me for 20 pence. "I'm working my way towards a
sandwhich" he says. So I offered him some Pita bread. He looked sort of
taken aback for a minute, and then said "okay, I lied, it was for beer".
I said I couldn't give him Money for beer. "Okay, it's for tea." Anna
pipes up: "just give him some money, Chris" and so I hand him 1 pound.
"This is a pound!" he says. I says "Yes, and I'll take the change that
you have, but I don't htink you have any to give me." He came over, bent
down, and kissed me on my knee. He started blessing me and my future and
my children, and walked away happily.
Five minutes later, he comes back, hands me a small blue plastic egg, says
"I know you have a brain. The instructions are inside" and walks away. I
open it up and inse are the plastic parts and instructions for assembling
a little plastic toaster. That's been my favorite London souvenir yet.
Now it's Wednesday and I've done all the usual sites plus a few extras.
More details on all that later (only 4 minutes left on my Internet Cafe
account). Saturday I head off to Berlin and the rest of Europe....I'll
keep you posted.
Chris
