Firenze

Wow. I like Italy. I like it a lot. I would say that word "enchanting"
aptly sums up the general atmosphere here in Florence. And what a neat
place.

I have inadvertently, either by getting lost or by looking for a quiet
place to eat lunch or by following some music or some crowd, seen quite a
lot of the city. I have done several of the tourist things and I'm
avoiding some of the others (e.g. an exhibit entitled "torture machines
through the ages" at a local museum). I've seen and entered great
churches, but more importantly, I've sat on their steps and read a book
and watched people. Buildings are relatively useless if they are only
aesthetically significant and not functional, I think.

Last night I went to a concert of some varities of music, given by about
11 Swedish fluting women in a local church. I spent today on the other
side of the river Arno, most of my time given to enjoying the Boboli
gardens (surely you've heard of Boboli Pizza crusts and sauce, etc?)
which were absolutely wonderful.

Tonight, I'm off to enjoy one of my favorite products of Italy: Mozart.
His "Requiem" is being performed at one of the larger chruches and I can't
wait to see it. Tomorrow is my last day in here, to make it 4 days total,
and then I'm off to Nice, France and beyond. I'm reluctant to leave this
place and my nice hotel room and the beautiful streets and friendly
people, but I'm happy to have experienced it for this long.

More later...Chris
