First Exam

Ugh, that was awful. I just got back from my first exam (3 to 5 PM on a
Saturday!?!) and I'm SO glad it's over. It was one of those dealies where
there were about 500 of us in a gymnasium, sitting at uncomfortable desks
in uncomfortable chairs, a nerve-racking silence cast over the whole
place, and lots of older people walking around with various instruments of
torture, should one of us sneeze or exhale. It was completely unique from
any test-taking experience I've had in the U.S.; these people take their
exams VERY seriously - the campus has been dead quiet for the past week
and it's all people talk about: "Hey, how's it going? Studying for
exams?" "Yeah, how many do you have?" "Oh, about 45. And I've been
studying every day for about 18 hours." "Is that all? Wow, I study about
22 hours per day." "Yeah, well, I'm just getting started." And so on.

Much to the dismay of 497 people, I was one of the first to finish, and so
I started walking out early. My professor for the course - Environmental
Resource Management - glared at me like everyone else was doing. I asked
her if I needed to turn in the exam question sheet as well, and she said
"No, you can keep that, James" and sort of threw the paper at me. Hmmm.

Of course, this is the class where I wrote (accurately, I think) on the
evaluation sheet "This course was an exercise in self-contradiction..."
and I think my professor might have been a little, well, annoyed at that.
You see, they read their evaluation sheets *before* they grade your exams
here. Not a healthy practice, in my humble opinion - for them or for me.
At least now she knows my first name...(insert weak, short-lived laughter
here).
