Slightly related story about selling out: At a meeting last night for the Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative (rainbowbookstore.org), I learned the even a great (relatively) new Madison event has sold out....surprising but true. The organizers of the annual Wisconsin Book Festival (wisconsinbookfestival.org) have entered into a contract for Border's to be the official sponser. What this means is that they get lots of money and in return, Border's gets to sell books exclusively at the largest events, blocking out the small independant bookstores in Madison. This is an event in which Rainbow has participated in the past, sponsoring famous authors and selling books at the events to support the coop and increase public awareness of the coop. This year, Rainbow is only supporting the madisonzinefest.org and one author.

It's a shame that such a great local event happens in a city that has so many independant bookstores, yet the organizers (folks at the Wisconsin Humanities Council) feel the need to make an exclusive agreement with a major corporation. Not surprising in this age of corporate domination, but I like to have higher standards than that for this city.

As for credit card solicitations, I've made it a practice to send the postage paid reply envelopes back to the company with "Take me off your mailing list" in marker across the application.

There's a do-not-email-me-with-credit-card-offers list, like the do-not-call-list. I can't remember where, but it's out there somewhere. I signed up a while ago, and it seems to have worked, because I can't recall getting anything recently.
